Discover more about Tumuli de Champ Châlons

The Tumuli de Champ Châlons are a set of seven Neolithic tumuli that form two necropolises, Champ Châlons I and Champ Châlons II, located north of the Benon forest near Courçon in the Charente-Maritime department of France. These mounds provide insight into the funerary practices of Neolithic populations that inhabited the region thousands of years ago. The necropolis of Champ Châlons I consists of five tumuli, while Champ Châlons II has two. Excavations have been conducted only at Champ Châlons I, revealing valuable information about the site's history and significance. Radiocarbon dating indicates that the monuments were used between the 5th and 4th millennia BC. The tumuli are located on a ridge overlooking a marshy depression, which during the Neolithic period was a maritime advance, with the sea level being 5 to 6 meters lower than it is today. The tumuli were discovered in 1979 and 1982 by Frédéric Bouin. Excavations of all the tumuli in Champ Châlons I (except tumulus E) were carried out between 1980 and 1986 under the direction of Roger Joussaume and Robert Cadot. Tumuli B and C have been listed as historical monuments since August 6, 1992. Visitors can explore the area and imagine the lives and rituals of the people who built these ancient monuments. While the site may not be as visually striking as some other historical attractions, its historical significance and peaceful setting make it a worthwhile visit for those interested in archaeology and prehistory.
