Getting there

Walking

From the village of Entrevaux, the only way to reach the Citadelle is on foot. Follow the paved path that zigzags up the hillside for approximately 800 meters. The path passes under 20 arches and around 9 switchbacks. The walk takes around 30 minutes to an hour, depending on fitness levels. Entrance to the citadel costs €5 for adults and €2 for children, payable at the turnstile.

Public Transport

The Chemins de Fer de Provence train line connects Nice to Entrevaux. From the Entrevaux train station, it's a short walk into the village. Once in the village, follow the walking guidance to ascend to the Citadelle. A single train ticket from Nice to Entrevaux costs around €36.30.

Parking

If arriving by car, several parking options are available in Entrevaux. Parking Louis Moreau is the main parking area in the village. From the parking area, walk into the village and follow the walking guidance to ascend to the Citadelle. Parking is generally free.

Overview

The Citadelle d'Entrevaux, a historic fortress designed by Vauban, stands guard over the picturesque medieval village of Entrevaux in the Alpes-de-Haute-Provence. The site has been strategically important since Roman times, with the current village being established in the 11th century. For centuries, Entrevaux served as a frontier town between Savoy and Provence, witnessing numerous sieges and conflicts.In the 17th century, Louis XIV commissioned Vauban, his military engineer, to fortify the site. Vauban transformed the existing fortifications into an impenetrable fortress, adding towers, reinforcing the gates, and designing a ramped access path. The citadel successfully repelled a Savoyard siege in 1704 and remained a military garrison until the early 20th century.Today, visitors can explore the citadel's ramparts, barracks, and dungeons, experiencing the life of soldiers who once defended this strategic location. The ascent to the citadel is via a paved path with switchbacks, offering panoramic views of the village and the Var valley. The Citadelle d'Entrevaux provides a fascinating journey through military history and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape.
