Discover more about Cathedral Saint-Pierre de Rennes

Cathédrale Saint-Pierre de Rennes, located in the heart of the city, is a magnificent testament to Rennes' historical and architectural evolution. The cathedral's story began in the 6th century, making it one of the oldest Christian sites in Brittany. The initial wooden structure was replaced by a Romanesque church in the 12th century. In 1490, the Gothic tower and western facade collapsed, leading to a reconstruction that spanned over 163 years. The resulting granite facade showcases a neoclassical design, completed in the 18th century. This blend of styles distinguishes it from other cathedrals in Brittany. The twin towers, standing at 48 meters, frame the entrance, adorned with carvings and statues. Inside, the cathedral features a nave adorned with 44 Ionic columns. The high altar, a masterpiece of marble craftsmanship, dates back to the 18th century. The play of light through the stained-glass windows creates an ethereal atmosphere. The crypt, dating back to the 11th century, provides a space for quiet reflection. The cathedral also houses an impressive collection of religious art, including a 15th-century painting, the Adoration of the Shepherds. The cathedral has undergone several restoration programs, including significant interior cleaning and restoration from 2009 to 2014. Today, Cathédrale Saint-Pierre stands as a living link between past and present, inviting visitors to appreciate the enduring power of faith, art, and human achievement.
