Discover more about Fort du Saint-Eynard

Fort du Saint-Eynard, a historic fortress located on Mont Saint-Eynard in the Chartreuse mountain range, stands as a silent sentinel overlooking the city of Grenoble. Built between 1875 and 1879, it was the last of seven forts constructed to form Grenoble's fortified belt, designed by Richard de Régnauld de Lannoy de Bissy. The fort, based on the Séré de Rivières system, never saw battle, but it controlled routes across the Chartreuse thanks to its 25 artillery pieces and a garrison of 477 men. Rising to an altitude of 1,338 meters, the fort offers visitors a 360° panoramic view encompassing the Belledonne massif, the Grésivaudan valley, and the city of Grenoble. The fort's strategic position made it a key element in the defense of Grenoble against potential invasions. Today, Fort du Saint-Eynard is open to the public from May to October, offering a glimpse into military history and stunning natural beauty. Visitors can explore the fort's architecture, learn about its history through a permanent exhibition, and enjoy temporary art exhibitions. A restaurant within the fort provides a place to relax and soak in the views. The site extends over 65,000 square meters, divided into four buildings and two courtyards. The fort is accessible by car (though the road is closed in winter) and on foot.
