Discover more about Museum of Seismology and Earth Magnetism

The Musée de Sismologie et de Magnétisme Terrestre (Museum of Seismology and Earth Magnetism) offers a fascinating look into the science of geophysics. Located opposite the University of Strasbourg's Botanical Garden, the museum is linked to the School and Observatory of Earth Sciences (EOST). The museum is situated in the building that was originally opened in 1900 as a central seismological station under Kaiser Wilhelm II. The station was in operation until the 1970s when it was gradually replaced by more modern instruments located in the Vosges mountains. The location was chosen to be outside of Strasbourg due to increasing unwanted signals from urban development. In 1992, the museum was established to celebrate a century of earthquake recording in Strasbourg. The museum displays a collection of historical seismometers and instruments used to measure changes in the Earth's magnetic field. These tools were used until the 1980s in scientific research bases in the French Southern and Antarctic Lands. Visitors can explore the evolution of these instruments and learn about the history of seismology in Strasbourg. The museum became accessible to the public in 1996 and attracts around 6,000 visitors each year, including school groups.
