The Puits des Fangettes, whose name translates to "muddy place," is a historical well situated near La Roque-Sainte-Marguerite in the Causse Noir region. Also known as Puits de Bouzette or Fouguette, this well stands out due to its unique architectural design. What makes it remarkable is the presence of a spiral staircase built into the well's structure, enabling people to descend and access the water, regardless of its level.Believed to potentially originate from the Gallo-Roman era, the well may have served the resin extraction industry that thrived in the area when vast pine forests covered the Causse Noir. Workers involved in resin production likely established camps nearby and found this location ideal for digging a well to reach the essential water table. The discovery of pottery shards dating back to that era further supports this theory.Unfortunately, the heatwave of 2003 took a toll on the well. Today, the Puits des Fangettes remains a testament to the resourcefulness of earlier populations and provides an intriguing look into the region's history.
