The Château de Versailles, located about 18 kilometers west of Paris, is a former royal residence and a symbol of French royalty. What began as a humble hunting lodge built by Louis XIII in 1623, was transformed into a magnificent palace by his successor, Louis XIV, starting in 1661. Over the decades, Kings Louis XV and Louis XVI further contributed to its grandeur. In 1682, Louis XIV moved the seat of his court and government to Versailles, effectively making it the capital of France. Versailles served as the center of French political power until the French Revolution in 1789, when the royal family returned to Paris. In the 19th century, King Louis-Philippe converted the palace into the Museum of the History of France. Today, the Château de Versailles is a UNESCO World Heritage site, attracting millions of visitors each year to explore its opulent architecture, meticulously designed gardens, and historical significance. Key highlights include the Hall of Mirrors, a dazzling gallery adorned with hundreds of mirrors, and the State Apartments, each dedicated to an Olympian deity. The expansive gardens, designed by André Le Nôtre, feature manicured lawns, sculptures, and fountains. The Estate of Trianon, comprising the Grand Trianon and Petit Trianon, offers a more intimate glimpse into royal life. The Queen's Hamlet, a rustic retreat favored by Marie Antoinette, showcases a contrasting taste for the charms of country life.
