Spanning the Seine River, the Pont de la Tournelle is more than just a crossing; it's a testament to Parisian resilience and architectural ingenuity. Located between the 4th and 5th arrondissements, the bridge links the Quai de la Tournelle on the Left Bank to the Quai d'Orléans and Quai de Béthune on the Île Saint-Louis. Its strategic position offers picturesque views of the surrounding cityscape.The bridge's history dates back to the 12th century when a tower, part of Philippe Auguste's fortifications, stood in the area. Several bridges have occupied this site, each succumbing to floods or ice. The current structure, completed in 1928, is made of reinforced concrete clad in stone. Designed by engineers Deval, Lang, and Retraint, the bridge is intentionally asymmetrical to highlight the Seine's natural beauty.The bridge comprises three arches, with the central arch stretching 74 meters. On the Left Bank, a 14-meter pylon supports a statue of Sainte Geneviève, sculpted by Paul Landowski. The statue faces westward, symbolically protecting Paris from upstream threats. The Pont de la Tournelle is not only a vital thoroughfare but also a symbol of Parisian history and architectural innovation.
