Discover more about Bougainville Park

Bougainville Park, located in the heart of Papeete, is a delightful green space offering a serene retreat from the bustling city. Originally named Place Publique de Papeete, it has served as a venue for significant events, including the ceremony where King Pomare V ceded the Society Islands to France in 1880. In the 1840s, the park was surrounded by administrative buildings, including the military general store, Port Authority, Post Office, and Customs Office. A cyclone in 1906 destroyed most of these buildings, leaving only the rebuilt Post Office. In 1934, it was renamed Place Albert 1er in honor of Albert I, the King of Belgium. However, in 1968, a bronze bust of Louis Antoine de Bougainville was installed, leading locals to call it Bougainville Park. To avoid a diplomatic issue, the council officially confirmed the name Place Albert 1er, but in 2005, it was finally renamed Parc Bougainville. Today, the park features tranquil streams, a banyan tree, benches, and a traditional 'fare pote'e' pavilion. A playground with swings and rides makes it popular with families. The park also displays two historical cannons from World War I, adding to its historical charm. Bougainville Park provides a refreshing escape in the heart of Papeete.
