Discover more about The Lagoonarium

The Lagoonarium is a fascinating natural aquarium located on a small motu (islet) east of Bora Bora's main island. Founded in 1984 by Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the renowned oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, the Lagoonarium was created to allow tourists to experience the beauty of marine life up close while promoting conservation. The Lagoonarium serves as a protected habitat and coral nursery, home to a variety of aquatic species, including sharks, turtles, rays, and over 100 species of fish. Marine biologists perform weekly maintenance on the lagoon and coral nursery, offering guests the chance to learn about efforts to save tropical marine life. The lagoon's environment is engineered to encourage coral growth with a circulation of cold, nutrient-rich saltwater, promoting coral regeneration and providing food and shelter for fish. Visitors can snorkel under the supervision of wildlife guides and observe the marine life in a natural setting. Some tours include extras such as a barbecue picnic or a canoe island tour. The Lagoonarium is near the St. Regis Resort, where the movie 'Couples Retreat' was filmed.
