Mont Rotui: Moorea's Majestic Divide
Hike to the summit of Mont Rotui in Moorea for breathtaking views and a taste of Polynesian legend. A challenging climb with unforgettable rewards.
Rising majestically in northern Moorea, Mont Rotui is more than just a mountain; it's a natural divider between the idyllic Cook's Bay and Opunohu Bay. Standing at 899 meters, or 2,950 feet, this peak offers adventurous travelers a challenging hike with unforgettable panoramic vistas. The ascent to Mont Rotui's summit is not for the faint of heart. The 7-kilometer (4.3 miles) roundtrip trail is rated as difficult, involving steep inclines and exposed ridges. The terrain can be slippery, especially after rain, so sturdy hiking shoes and plenty of water (3-5 liters is recommended) are essential. Allow at least half a day, or 5-7 hours, for the round trip. Starting early in the morning is advisable to avoid the heat. Despite the demanding nature of the hike, the reward is well worth the effort. From the summit, hikers are treated to breathtaking 360-degree views of Moorea's lush interior, the sparkling turquoise lagoons, and the dramatic coastlines. The mountain is also rich in local legend, adding a cultural dimension to the natural beauty. According to one tale, Hiro, the god of thieves, attempted to steal Mont Rotui, only to be thwarted by the god Pai who pierced another mountain, Mou'a-puta, with his spear. Another legend speaks of an octopus hiding on Mont Rotui after divisions arose among the people, squirting ink down the mountain. Whether you're drawn by the physical challenge, the stunning scenery, or the allure of Polynesian mythology, Mont Rotui promises an unforgettable experience.
