4.7

Vallée de Papenoo, also called Papenoo Valley, is a stunning ravine located in Hitiaʻa O Te Ra, French Polynesia. Formed by the collapsed crater of the Tahiti Nui volcano, the valley's 91km² watershed represents 10% of Tahiti's total surface area. Historically known as Ha'apai'ano'o (the gathering of all water) and Te Mano Rahi (10,000 warriors), it served as a refuge and residence for important Tahitian chieftains for centuries. Today, Vallée de Papenoo offers a mesmerizing landscape of verdant mountains and crystal-clear rivers. The valley is rich in biodiversity, showcasing the unique flora and fauna of French Polynesia. Hiking trails lead to hidden waterfalls and panoramic viewpoints. Key attractions include the Topatari Falls (80 meters), Vaiharuru Falls (50 meters), and Puraha Falls (30 meters). Visitors can explore ancient archaeological sites, including dwellings, basalt mines, and agricultural terraces. Guided tours often share captivating tales from the region's past, enriching the understanding of the land and its people. Activities such as kayaking, snorkeling, and fishing are available in the pristine waters. The valley also holds cultural significance, with sites like Marae Fare Hape, a temple dedicated to the god of the dog. To traverse the valley, visitors can take the traversière, the only track in Tahiti that cuts through the island. A basalt tunnel, constructed in the 1980s, allows passage through the mountains.
