Discover more about Water Gardens Vaipahi

The Vaipahi Water Gardens, also known as Jardins d'eau de Vaipahi, offer visitors a serene and historically significant experience on the island of Tahiti. Located in the district of Mataiea, these gardens span 2.5 acres and showcase a diverse collection of over 75 plant species from around the world. For centuries, this location has been a spiritually significant site for Polynesians. According to ancient legends of the Teva tribe, the waters of the Vaimai River, which run through the gardens, held healing properties and served as a pathway for soul purification. The Vaipahi Waterfall, the garden's centerpiece, was believed to be where one could feel the "mighty breath of the spirit of the waters". The souls of the deceased of the Teva clan took this path of purification of souls during their quest for paradise. In addition to their cultural importance, the Water Gardens boast a rich array of flora. Visitors can explore the gardens via walking paths that wind through grassy lawns and ponds. The gardens feature waterfalls, streams, and ponds filled with water lilies and lotus flowers. Informative signage in French, Tahitian, and English provides insights into the various plant species and shares ancient Tahitian stories connected to the gardens. The gardens weren't much of a tourist spot until 2007 when the local government renovated it and turned it into a botanical garden. Today, the gardens are a popular destination for both locals and tourists, including school groups.
