Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Air Travel
The primary way to reach Fakarava is by air via Air Tahiti from Faa'a International Airport in Papeete, Tahiti. Air Tahiti offers direct and connecting flights (via Rangiroa or Bora Bora) several times a week. Book flights well in advance, as they can be expensive and sell out quickly. Upon arrival at Fakarava Airport, most accommodations in the north provide complimentary truck/bus transfers. If staying in the south (Tetamanu), a 1.5-hour boat ride from the north is necessary, typically arranged by your accommodation. A round trip ticket from Tahiti will cost approximately $390.
Bicycle
Once on the island, a popular way to get around is by bicycle. Some accommodations offer complimentary bikes. From Rotoava, the main village, you can cycle to the North Pass, enjoying views of the ocean along the way. There are limited services, so ensure your bike is in good condition before setting off. There is no formal rental company but your accommodation may be able to arrange a rental.
