Designated a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Fakarava is a sanctuary for rare species of birds, plants, and crustaceans, making it a haven for nature enthusiasts. The atoll's history includes its time as the former capital of the Tuamotu Islands. The village of Tetamanu, located at the southern end of the lagoon, features a historic Catholic Church constructed entirely from coral in 1874.
