Anacopia Fortress, located near the town of New Athos in Abkhazia, is a remarkable historical site that offers a journey back in time. In 736/737, it withstood a siege by a massive Umayyad Caliphate army, marking a significant turning point in the region's history. The fortress was restored in 2008 to improve safety and reinstate the tower as a lookout point. These leave frequently from the central bus station in Sukhumi; the ride takes approximately 45 minutes. Ask the driver to drop you off at the stop for Anacopia Fortress. The marshrutka fare is typically around 50-70 RUB. From the drop-off point, it's a short walk to the base of the Iverian Mountain, where the trail to the fortress begins.
