Bagrat Castle: A Glimpse into Abkhazia's Medieval Past

Bagrat Castle, located near Sokhumi, Abkhazia, is a ruined medieval castle that whispers tales of centuries past. Named in honor of King Bagrat III or Bagrat IV, this fortress is traditionally dated to the late 10th or 11th century. The castle ruins are situated on a hill on the left bank of the Basla River, in the southeastern part of Sokhumi. Measuring 55 x 27 meters, the castle's surviving structures include walls that rise to 10-12 meters in height. An oval-shaped edifice and a rectangular tower guarding the entrance gateway, which bears traces of tunnels, are still visible. Archaeological digs in the 1950s unearthed fortified structures, wine jars, jugs, glazed pottery, and other artifacts from the 12th to 14th centuries, providing insights into the castle's vibrant past. Local legend attributes the castle's naming and dating, but architectural evidence suggests it may have served as the seat of the eristavi (governor) of Tskhumi (Sokhumi's medieval name) at a later time. Historian Yuri Voronov even proposed that Queen Tamar of Georgia might have stayed at the castle during her visits to Abkhazia in the early 13th century. The castle also served as a refuge for local elites like the Shervashidze family during times of danger. In the 16th century, as the main settlement shifted west to the river's right bank, the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair. Today, Georgia has recognized the castle as a Cultural Monument of National Significance, emphasizing the urgent need for its conservation. Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the bay and Sukhum from the castle grounds.
