Discover more about New Athos Monastery

The New Athos Monastery, officially known as the Monastery of St. Simon the Canaanite, stands as a testament to faith and architectural grandeur in Abkhazia. Established in 1875 by monks from the St. Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos in Greece, it quickly became a significant religious and cultural center. The monastery's location at the foot of the Iversky and Athos Mountains offers a picturesque backdrop, enhancing its spiritual allure. The monastery complex comprises six temples, forming a courtyard with central buildings. The centerpiece is the five-domed Panteleimon Cathedral, the largest in Abkhazia, adorned with vibrant frescoes that narrate biblical stories. The monastery's architecture blends Byzantine and Russian styles, creating a unique visual appeal with its golden domes and ornate decorations. Throughout its history, the New Athos Monastery has faced challenges, including looting during the Russo-Turkish War and periods of closure during the Soviet era when it was repurposed as a museum and hospital. However, it was returned to the church in 1994, and restoration efforts continue to revive its former glory. Today, visitors can explore the grounds, admire the architecture, and experience the peaceful atmosphere. The monastery also hosts religious events and ceremonies, offering insights into local customs and traditions. The surrounding landscape offers hiking trails with panoramic views of the Black Sea and lush hills, blending nature and spirituality.
