Adjarian Wine House: A Taste of Tradition
Discover Adjarian winemaking traditions at this multifaceted destination with vineyards, wine tasting, and Georgian cuisine near Batumi.
The Adjarian Wine House, officially opened in December 2010, stands as a testament to Adjara's rich winemaking heritage. Located in the Khelvachauri municipality, a mere 20 km from Batumi, the winery is easily accessible and has become a popular destination for both locals and tourists. Built on the ruins of an 18th-century winery, the Adjarian Wine House aims to revive the region's historical winemaking traditions. The winery boasts vineyards, two wine factories, a restaurant, an enotheque, and a wine cellar with traditional Qvevri. Visitors can explore the vineyards, learn about Georgian winemaking, and taste local wines made using traditional technologies. The Wine House produces white, rose, and red wines, along with a variety of Chacha and Cognac. A specialty is the Chkhaveri Rose under the brand "Porto Franco", made from an old Georgian grape variety unique to Western Georgia. The restaurant provides an elegant setting for private events, including weddings. The interior design incorporates local artifacts and offers glimpses into the wine cellar below. Adding to the ambiance is a narrow pond with fish. Master classes are available, offering insights into Qvevri opening rituals, wine tasting, Khinkali making, Churchkhela conversion, bread baking, Ajarian cheese making, grape stomping, and Chacha distilling. The name "Porto Franco" is a nod to Batumi's history as a free economic zone in the late 19th century. The numbers 41.3 and 41.3 on the "Chkhaveri" Wine and Chacha labels represent Batumi's longitude and latitude.
