Vera Park: Tbilisi's Green Retreat

Vera Park, located at the intersection of Merab Kostava and Nikoladze streets in Tbilisi's Vera district, is a beloved urban oasis. The park provides a blend of recreational and cultural experiences, making it a favorite among locals and tourists alike. Originally, the area where Vera Park now stands was part of a larger garden that stretched from the Blue Monastery to the Mtkvari River. In 1898, as the city expanded, a former cemetery was transformed into a public garden. During the Soviet era, it was named after Sergei Kirov, but after Georgia regained independence, it reverted to its original name. The park features sports facilities, including tennis courts, basketball and volleyball halls, and even a boxing ring. The Chess Palace, alpine club, and a chess club for retirees add to the park's diverse appeal. Vera Park is also known for its verdant landscape, with 61 species of woody plants, including cedar, oak, and sagebrush. The park also features monuments, including a statue of Ekvtime Takaishvili and a bust of Merab Kostava, as well as the graves of mountaineering pioneers. Currently undergoing rehabilitation expected to be completed by the end of 2025, Vera Park is set to become an even more modern and accessible recreational space.
