Discover more about Dzveli Shuamta's Monastery

Dzveli Shuamta Monastery, also known as Old Shuamta, is a captivating monastic complex located 7 kilometers west of Telavi, in the Kakheti region of Georgia. Situated on a forested mountain at approximately 1015 meters above sea level, the monastery's name, meaning "between the mountains," reflects its secluded and picturesque setting. The complex comprises three churches: a 5th-century basilica and two 7th-century domed churches. The basilica stands as one of the most remarkable examples of early Christian architecture in Georgia. The larger of the two domed churches bears a striking resemblance to the iconic Jvari Monastery in Mtskheta, showcasing the architectural influences of the time. The third church is a smaller domed structure with a simpler tetraconch design. All three churches are constructed using cobblestone, with travertine accents on the corners. A unique passage connects the basilica directly to the larger domed church, allowing seamless movement between the two. Dzveli Shuamta was abandoned in the 16th century, adding to its mystique and historical significance. In contrast, the nearby New Shuamta Monastery (Akhali Shuamta), founded by Princess Tinatin Gurieli in the 16th century, features a brick church adorned with frescoes and continues to be an active nunnery. While Dzveli Shuamta is no longer occupied by monks or nuns, the largest domed church houses an altar with icons, providing a space for contemplation. Visitors to Dzveli Shuamta can explore the ancient churches, admire the stone carvings and the remnants of frescoes, and experience the tranquil atmosphere of this historical sanctuary. The monastery offers a serene escape into nature and a unique opportunity to connect with Georgia's rich religious and cultural heritage.
