Sataplia Nature Reserve, located just 10 km northwest of Kutaisi, is a captivating destination that blends prehistoric history with natural beauty. The reserve gets its name from Mount Sataplia, which translates to "place of honey," as bees used to inhabit the mountain's caves. The reserve is famous for its well-preserved dinosaur footprints, dating back millions of years. Discovered by local teacher Petre Chabukiani, these footprints led to the establishment of the reserve in 1935. A dedicated pavilion protects the footprints, offering visitors an up-close look at these ancient imprints. The Sataplia Cave is another highlight, featuring stunning stalactites and stalagmites formed over millennia. The cave extends for 900 meters, with a 314-meter section open for guided tours. Inside, the temperature remains a constant 14°C, a welcome respite from the summer heat. Adding to the experience is a modern glass-bottomed observation deck that provides breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including Kutaisi. The reserve also includes a museum showcasing local geology, flora, and fauna, as well as a recreation area and cafe. Two tourist trails wind through the reserve, allowing visitors to explore the Colchis Forest and other natural features. Knowledgeable guides offer tours in Georgian, English, and Russian, enhancing the experience with insights into the reserve's history and geology.
