Discover more about Mtatsminda Pantheon

The Mtatsminda Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures is a place of reverence, nestled on the slopes of Mtatsminda (Holy Mountain), in Tbilisi. This necropolis serves as the final resting place for some of Georgia's most prominent figures, including writers, artists, scholars, and national heroes. Officially established in 1929, the Pantheon's origins trace back to the burial of Russian writer Alexander Griboyedov and his Georgian wife, Nino Chavchavadze. The Pantheon's opening marked the centennial of Griboyedov's death and was conceived as a symbol of Georgian collective identity. Today, it holds the remains of over 50 luminaries who have shaped Georgian history and culture. Visitors can explore the graves adorned with monuments and busts crafted by renowned Georgian sculptors. Among those interred are Ilia Chavchavadze, a revered writer and national figure, whose grave features the poignant sculpture 'Grieving Georgia'. The Pantheon's history reflects Georgia's political shifts, from the Soviet era to its independence. Beyond its historical and cultural significance, the Mtatsminda Pantheon offers a tranquil escape with stunning panoramic views of Tbilisi. Adjacent to the Pantheon is the Mamadaviti Church (St. David's Church), adding spiritual significance to the location.
