Tbilisi Funicular: A Ride to the Top of Tbilisi

The Tbilisi Funicular, a historical landmark, offers a scenic and convenient way to ascend to Mtatsminda Park, which sits 770 meters above sea level. The railway connects the lower station on Chonkadze Street to the upper station, providing access to the park's amusement rides, restaurants, and panoramic viewpoints. Constructed between 1903 and 1905, the funicular was an international project involving French, Italian, Belgian, Polish, Russian, and Georgian engineers. The idea to build the funicular came from the Belgian engineer Alphonse Robbie. The Tbilisi Funicular was opened on March 27th, 1905. The construction aimed to develop the Mtatsminda plateau and connect it with the rest of Tbilisi. For a while, people were scared to sit into the carriage and take the first ride. The funicular has three stations: the lower station, the middle station (where visitors can see the Mtatsminda Pantheon of Writers and Public Figures and St. David's Church Mamadaviti) and the upper station. The ride to the top takes only 5 minutes. The railway was reconstructed in 1936-1938 and again in 2012 with modern equipment. Today, the Tbilisi Funicular remains a popular attraction, offering both locals and tourists a unique perspective on the city.
