Partskhisi Fortress: A Sentinel of Kvemo Kartli

Partskhisi Fortress, located in the Tetritskaro municipality, Kvemo Kartli, stands as a silent witness to Georgia's rich history. Situated on a commanding hill on the left bank of the Algeti River, the fortress controlled one of the main roads of Kvemo Kartli. While its exact origins remain shrouded in mystery, mentions in historical sources date back to the reign of Bagrat IV (1027-1072), suggesting an even earlier construction. Archaeological excavations have revealed evidence of settlement on the hill dating back 3,000 years. Strategically positioned, Partskhisi Fortress offered clear views of other key fortifications like Birtvisi, Orbeti, and the southeastern approaches to Kojori. The fortress ruins reveal a long, symmetrical plan, oriented east to west, comprising a central citadel surrounded by a concentric outer wall. The citadel's western section was fortified with double walls, possibly supporting a towering three- or four-story structure. Cobblestone walls, with cut stone used in the upper layers, and a wide, arched entrance exemplify the fortress's construction. Today, Partskhisi Fortress exists as a captivating ruin, with sections of its walls still standing. Although the entrance to the outer walls is lost, a single opening remains at the top, on the north side. Local lore speaks of a tunnel leading to the Algeti River, its entrance now blocked to prevent accidents.
