The Giorgi Chitaia Tbilisi Open Air Museum of Ethnography, founded in 1966 by Georgian ethnographer Giorgi Chitaia, offers a captivating glimpse into the country's diverse cultural heritage. Located west of Turtle Lake on a hill overlooking the Vake district, the museum spans 52 hectares and features over 70 buildings and 8,000 artifacts representing various regions of Georgia. The museum is arranged into eleven zones, each showcasing a specific historic-ethnographic area of Georgia. Visitors can explore traditional darbazi-type and flat-roofed stone houses from eastern Georgia, openwork wooden houses from western Georgia, and watchtowers from mountainous provinces like Svaneti. Other exhibits include Megrelian and Imeretian wattle maize storages, Kakhetian wineries, and Kartlian water mills. Beyond architecture, the museum displays a rich collection of household articles, including distaffs, knitting frames, clothes, carpets, pottery, and furniture. The museum also features a 5th-6th century basilica of Sioni and a 6th-7th century familial burial vault with sarcophagus. Since 2004, the museum has hosted the annual Art-Gene folk culture festival, adding a vibrant layer to the visitor experience. The museum provides a tranquil environment for visitors to experience Georgian folk exhibitions and festivals throughout the year.
