    Discover more about Tmogvi Castle

Tmogvi Castle, also known as Tmkaberd, is a ruined fortress located in the Samtskhe-Javakheti region of Georgia, near the village of Tmogvi. The name Tmogvi is believed to be derived from the Georgian word 'mogvi', meaning 'pagan priest'. The fortress is strategically situated on a high, rocky mountain on the left bank of the Kura River (also known as the Mtkvari), a few kilometers downstream from the cave city of Vardzia. First mentioned in historical sources from the 9th century, Tmogvi controlled an ancient trade route between the Javakheti plateau and the Kura River gorge. It gained importance after the neighboring town and fortress of Tsunda was ruined around 900 AD. The fortress was expanded over time and was a crucial military stronghold. In 914, Arab forces besieged Tmogvi but were unsuccessful in capturing it. By the beginning of the 11th century, it was under the direct control of the unified Kingdom of Georgia. Tmogvi was ruled by loyal princes and families, including the Quabulisdzes, Tmogwelis, and Shalikashvilis. The fortress was considered impregnable for centuries, but earthquakes in 1089 and 1283 caused severe damage. After Mongol invasions, it came into the possession of the Jakeli princes. In the 16th century, the Ottoman Turks seized the region, but Tmogvi returned to Georgia under the Russian Empire in 1829. The fortress stretches across three hills of a rocky massif, with walls approximately 3 meters wide and 150 meters long. Ruins of a church, ancient walls, and defensive towers remain. A secret tunnel once connected the castle to the river, ensuring water access during sieges. The church of Saint Ephrem, located outside the walls, contains fragments of 13th-century frescoes. Tmogvi has inspired literature, including works by Hovhannes Tumanyan and Sophia Parnok, and the opera 'Almast' by Alexander Spendiaryan. Today, Tmogvi attracts adventurous travelers with its challenging climb and panoramic views.
