Discover more about Ertatsminda Saint Estate Church

Ertatsminda Saint Estate Church, located in the village of Ertatsminda in the Shida Kartli region, stands as a remarkable example of 13th-century Georgian architecture. The name 'Ertatsminda' is derived from 'Estatetsminda,' meaning St. Eustace, the church's patron saint. The church's history is intertwined with Georgia's turbulent past, having been damaged and rebuilt numerous times due to earthquakes and invasions. The church is a cross-domed structure built with carefully hewn blocks of yellow sandstone. Its design is characteristic of the period, featuring a dome supported by walls and two imposts. The facades are adorned with luxurious ornaments dating back to the first half of the 13th century. The interior was partially painted in 1654, during the reign of King Rostom and Queen Mariam. Fragments of these murals, depicting scenes from the lives of St. Eustace and St. George, can still be seen today. Throughout its history, Ertatsminda Church has been a significant religious and cultural center. In the late Middle Ages and early modern times, it was believed to possess miracle-working powers, attracting scores of sick people seeking healing. The church also holds a relic of historical significance: the head of Paata Saakadze, son of the controversial military commander Giorgi Saakadze, who was beheaded in 1625. From that period until the late 19th century, the church served as the burial place for the Tarkhan-Mouravi family, descendants of Giorgi Saakadze. Today, Ertatsminda Saint Estate Church continues to draw visitors with its stunning architecture, serene surroundings, and rich history. The church complex includes the church itself, a wall, a bell tower, and the remains of monastic and agricultural buildings. Exploring the grounds offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes, providing a tranquil escape and a chance to immerse oneself in Georgia's spiritual heritage.
