The funicular was the brainchild of Belgian engineer Alphons Robie, with construction beginning in 1903 and opening to the public in 1905. The railway climbs 501 meters (1,640 feet) with a steep gradient, making it one of the steepest funiculars in the world at the time. The original design was by French engineer A. Blanche, with architectural input from Tbilisi architect Alexander Shimkevich. Today, the Funicular Park offers a variety of attractions for all ages. These include an amusement park with rides, restaurants and cafes, and the Tbilisi TV Tower.
