Funicular Park: A Ride to Tbilisi's Heights

The Funicular Park, officially known as Mtatsminda Park, is accessible via the Tbilisi Funicular, a historic railway that has been transporting visitors to the top of Mtatsminda mountain since 1905. The park itself sits 770 meters (2,526 feet) above sea level, offering panoramic views of Tbilisi and a refreshing escape from the city's heat. The funicular was the brainchild of Belgian engineer Alphons Robie, with construction beginning in 1903 and opening to the public in 1905. The railway climbs 501 meters (1,640 feet) with a steep gradient, making it one of the steepest funiculars in the world at the time. The original design was by French engineer A. Blanche, with architectural input from Tbilisi architect Alexander Shimkevich. Today, the Funicular Park offers a variety of attractions for all ages. These include an amusement park with rides, restaurants and cafes, and the Tbilisi TV Tower. Visitors can also explore the Mtatsminda Pantheon, located near the funicular's middle station, and the Mamadaviti Church. The park is particularly popular in the summer, offering cooler temperatures and a vibrant atmosphere. The funicular itself is an integral part of the experience. The lower station, located on Chonkadze Street, features a restored domed station reminiscent of its original design. A ride on the funicular takes only a few minutes and provides stunning views of the city. At the top, the Funicular Complex offers dining options with panoramic views.
