Discover more about Tbilisi City Wall

The Tbilisi City Wall, veiled beneath the bustling streets, stands as a testament to the city's resilient past and vibrant history. Located in Old Tbilisi, the wall offers visitors a unique glimpse into the historical depths of Georgia's capital. This ancient fortification, dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries, has safeguarded the city through numerous invasions and conflicts. Originally constructed to protect the city, the wall's architecture reflects various historical influences, showcasing the interplay of cultures that have shaped Tbilisi over the years. Walking along the remnants of the wall, one can almost hear echoes of the past. The walls have multiple layers, evidence of Tbilisi having been repeatedly destroyed by invaders, requiring its fortifications to be rebuilt. The Narikala Fortress, constructed on the Sololaki range, is one of the most prominent features of the city walls. Today, the wall extends from the Narikala Fortress, down the slopes of Dadiani Street, to the plains. The fortification can be traced along Pushkin and Baratashvili streets, snaking through various lanes until it reaches the river. Unearthed in 2012 during renovations, these fragments from the 11th to 13th centuries have been carefully preserved. A pedestrian precinct with walkways and bridges has been created around a 110-meter wall fragment, allowing visitors to view this unique part of Tbilisi's rich history.
