Chakvinji Fortress, also called Jikhashkari Fortress, is a significant historical site in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region of Georgia. Located near the village of Jikhashkari, in the Zugdidi Municipality, the fortress sits atop a high mountain on the banks of the Chanistsqali River. Originally built in the 8th century AD during the Kingdom of Abkhazia, the fortress was reconstructed in the 12th century and significantly restored in the 16th or 17th century. The famous 18th-century Georgian historian Vakhushti Batonishvili described the area as a summer palace of Samegrelo, and it was the birthplace of David Dadiani, the last great Dadiani, in 1813. Chakvinji Fortress was also linked to the Silk Road. Archaeological studies have revealed a citadel, towers, and a church within the fortress. In 2017, the fortress was designated as a monument of national importance. Today, Chakvinji Fortress offers visitors a glimpse into Georgia's past, with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
