    Discover more about Tsaishi Cathedral

Tsaishi Cathedral, officially named the Cathedral of the Dormition of the Mother of God, stands as a powerful symbol of Georgia's enduring spiritual and architectural heritage. Located in the village of Tsaishi, near Zugdidi, the cathedral is the main church of the Zugdidi and Tsaishi Diocese, one of the oldest in Georgia. The history of the cathedral dates back to the 6th and 7th centuries, with mentions in episcopal records from 602 to 610 AD. The current domed structure was erected between the 13th and 14th centuries, replacing a former basilica. Over the centuries, Tsaishi Cathedral has been damaged by natural disasters and invasions, but it has always been restored. Bishop Malachi Gurieli is remembered for restoring the cathedral after a devastating earthquake in the early 17th century. Bishop Grigol Dadiani restored the main temple in 1777, constructed a stone bell tower, and fortified the monastery. The cathedral complex includes the Church of the Virgin Mary, a two-story bell tower, and the ruins of the episcopal palace. The eastern facade retains its original ornamental patterns and reliefs. Inside, visitors can admire the 17th-century fresco of St. George and a painting of the altar from the same period. The cathedral grounds also feature a palm garden and a 600-year-old linden tree. Tsaishi Cathedral is not only a place of worship but also a testament to the enduring spirit of the Georgian people.
