Avranlo Megalithic Fortress: A Journey Through Time

The Avranlo Megalithic Fortress, situated in the village of Avranlo in the Kvemo Kartli region of Georgia, is a captivating historical site dating back to the 1st millennium BC. This cyclopean fortress, built with a dry masonry technique, stands as a testament to ancient engineering and strategic importance. Strategically positioned, the fortress controlled the narrow passage connecting Trialeti with the Borjomi Gorge. The fortification system is arranged on three terraces that descend towards the Ktsia River, showcasing the area's natural defenses. The lowest tier features a semicircular wall, while the upper tiers reveal the remains of residential buildings and imposing walls reaching up to 4 meters in thickness. Archaeological excavations have unearthed artifacts from the Kura-Araxes culture, indicating continuous settlement around the fortress from the Mtkvari-Araxes period to the end of the 2nd millennium BC. A medieval Christian church and cave complex, known as the Abibo's Monastery, are also located within the fortress grounds, adding to the site's historical depth. Despite significant damage over time, Avranlo Fortress remains a compelling destination for history enthusiasts and nature lovers alike.
