    Kumurdo Cathedral, located 12 km southwest of Akhalkalaki, is a significant monument of Georgian architecture and religious history. Constructed in 964 AD during the reign of King Leon III, the cathedral was commissioned by Bishop Ioane and built by architect Sakotsari. The inscriptions on its walls, written in the ancient Georgian script of Asomtavruli, narrate the story of its creation and the prayers of its builders. During the Middle Ages, Kumurdo served as an important cultural, educational, and religious hub. The cathedral's unique architectural design features a domed structure with four square arms and a multi-apse layout, a distinctive characteristic among Georgian churches. The exterior is adorned with fine engravings and elaborate ornamentation, showcasing the evolving artistic techniques of the 10th and 11th centuries.
