Abano Mineral Lake: A Boiling Wonder

Nestled in the Truso Valley of Kazbegi Municipality, the Abano Mineral Lake Natural Monument presents a peculiar and captivating sight. Situated at an altitude of 2,127 meters on the left bank of the Terek River, this small karst lake covers just 0.04 hectares but holds a remarkable secret beneath its surface. The lake's distinctive characteristic is its constant 'boiling' appearance. This phenomenon occurs because the lake is fed by an underground stream filled with carbon dioxide, which rises through the Upper Jurassic carbonate rocks. The escaping gas bubbles create a দৃশ্যমান disturbance on the water's surface, making it seem as though the lake is perpetually simmering. The stream emits 2.5 million liters of water every 24 hours. However, this natural wonder has a darker side. In calm weather, the carbon dioxide accumulates in the lower layers of the air around the lake. This can be deadly to small animals that venture too close, leading to the occasional discovery of lifeless creatures like mice, lizards, frogs, and birds near the shore. Despite its ominous undertones, Abano Mineral Lake offers a glimpse into the raw power and fascinating, sometimes perilous, aspects of our planet's geology.
