Truso Travertines: A Geological Masterpiece
Witness the 'boiling' Abano Mineral Lake in Georgia's Truso Valley, a unique natural wonder with azure waters and a fascinating geological story.
Abano Mineral Lake is a unique natural monument in Georgia's Kazbegi region, known for its 'boiling' azure waters caused by a high concentration of carbon dioxide. This phenomenon, resulting from an underground stream surging through Jurassic-era carbonate rocks, creates a mesmerizing, if somewhat eerie, landscape where small animals sometimes succumb to the gas emissions.
Opening times, essentials, and a few local tips gathered into one calmer, easier-to-scan planning section.
Walking
From the village of Ketrisi, the Abano Mineral Lake is approximately a 2.8km walk via a detour pedestrian/horse road along the Terek River. The walk takes around 30 minutes. Be prepared for a moderately challenging trek, and wear appropriate footwear.
Public Transport
From Tbilisi, take a minibus to Kobi. From Kobi, Abano Lake is 18.6 km via a dirt road. Consider hiring a local taxi or arranging a 4x4 vehicle in Kobi to navigate the rough terrain. Alternatively, you can walk from Kobi, but be prepared for a lengthy hike. Minibus fare from Tbilisi to Khashuri is approximately $3.
Taxi
Taxis can be hired from Stepantsminda to reach the vicinity of Abano Lake. Be aware that the final stretch to the lake might require walking due to the rough road conditions. A taxi from Stepantsminda to Truso Valley (near Abano Lake) may cost around 80 GEL return. Negotiate the price beforehand.
