Zugdidi Botanical Garden: A Living Tapestry of Nature

Nestled in Zugdidi, Georgia, the Zugdidi Botanical Garden offers a serene escape into a world of botanical diversity. Founded in the 19th century by the Dadiani family, the garden spans 26 hectares and features a remarkable collection of plants from around the globe. It stands as a testament to the vision of Queen Ekaterine Chavchavadze-Dadiani, who enriched the garden with species sourced from as far as the Palace of Versailles and Italy. Originally conceived as a decorative garden for the Dadiani Palace, the garden quickly evolved into a hub for the introduction, research, and acclimatization of valuable subtropical plants. Today, visitors can explore over 80 species of trees, shrubs, and plants, including six species of magnolia, various oaks, and cedars from the Atlas and Himalayan regions. Relict and endemic plants from Asia, the Mediterranean, and the Americas add to the garden's unique charm. The garden's history is intertwined with the fortunes of the Dadiani family and the turbulent events of the 19th century. Despite periods of neglect and destruction, including during the Ottoman-Russian War, the garden has been lovingly restored and continues to thrive. Recent reconstruction efforts have enhanced its infrastructure, with new paths, an artificial lake, and improved facilities.
