Getting there

Driving

From Çıldır town center, head northeast towards Yıldırımtepe village. Follow the road for approximately 7 km. Once in Yıldırımtepe, follow the signs for Şeytan Castle. Drive as far as the road allows, keeping in mind that the final approach involves a walk along a narrow path. Parking is limited near the castle, so be prepared to walk a bit further from where you park. There are no parking fees.

Walking

From Yıldırımtepe village, follow the marked path towards Şeytan Castle. The walk is roughly 1.5 kilometers and takes about 30 minutes, depending on your pace. The path is narrow and can be steep in some places, so wear appropriate footwear. Enjoy the scenic views of the Karaçay Canyon as you approach the castle.

Şeytan Castle (Şeytan Kalesi), meaning "Devil's Castle," is a captivating historical site located in the Çıldır district of Ardahan, Turkey. Situated 1.5 kilometers northeast of Yıldırımtepe village, the castle stands dramatically on a cliff within the Karachay Canyon. Its strategic position provided a vantage point for surveillance and defense throughout its long history.Believed to have been founded during the Urartian period, the castle has been continuously used from the Hellenistic era to the Ottoman period. Each occupier renovated or modified the structure, leaving a blend of architectural styles. Within the castle walls, visitors can explore cisterns, a staircase leading to the water source, and the remains of a chapel. The cliffs surrounding the castle were as crucial to its defense as its walls.The name "Devil's Castle" comes from local legends of an evil spirit once sighted in the area. The castle is thought to date back to the 13th century when Georgian kings ruled the area and likely served as a border fortress. Today, Şeytan Castle is freely accessible and attracts visitors with its breathtaking views and historical ambiance.
