Discover more about Schneefernerhaus

Perched just below the summit of the Zugspitze, Germany's highest peak, the Schneefernerhaus is a remarkable structure with a rich history. Originally opened as a hotel in 1931, it provided tourists and skiers with unparalleled access to the alpine environment. The hotel even housed the top station of the Bavarian Zugspitze Railway, further cementing its role as a gateway to the mountains. However, the Schneefernerhaus's story took a turn in the late 20th century. Following a decline in tourism, the hotel ceased operations in the early 1990s. In 1999, the Free State of Bavaria transformed the building into a cutting-edge environmental research station. Today, the Schneefernerhaus hosts scientists from numerous German and international institutions, all dedicated to studying climate change, atmospheric conditions, and other pressing environmental issues. While guest operations and overnight stays aren't generally possible, the Schneefernerhaus offers guided tours for groups and individuals. These tours provide a fascinating glimpse into the world of high-altitude research and the unique challenges and opportunities it presents. Visitors can learn about the station's ongoing projects, explore the research facilities, and gain a deeper understanding of the complex processes that shape our planet.
