Discover more about Hundisburg Castle

Hundisburg Castle, nestled in the village of Hundisburg near Haldensleben, stands as a testament to Baroque architecture and garden design in Saxony-Anhalt. Its history dates back to the 12th century when it was first mentioned as a fortress. In 1452, the Alvensleben family acquired the castle, and in the 16th century, Ludolf X. von Alvensleben transformed it into a Renaissance castle. The castle's current Baroque style is largely attributed to Johann Friedrich II von Alvensleben, who commissioned its reconstruction between 1693 and 1712, drawing inspiration from Schloss Salzdahlum. Architects Johann Balthasar Lauterbach and Hermann Korb were instrumental in this transformation, creating what is considered one of the most important Baroque palaces in the region. The gardens, completed by 1719, are among the oldest classical French gardens in Germany. Over the centuries, Hundisburg Castle served as a residence for notable figures, including members of the Brunswick line and Prussian rulers. However, the Alvensleben family faced financial difficulties in the 19th century, leading to the sale of the castle to industrialist Johann Gottlob Nathusius in 1811. The Nathusius family used the palace for industrial purposes before Hermann Engelhard von Nathusius turned it into a model estate and animal breeding center. In 1945, Soviet troops seized the property, and a fire destroyed much of the castle. After German Reunification, efforts began to restore the castle and gardens. Today, Hundisburg Castle hosts cultural events, including the Summer Music Academy, and houses exhibitions. Visitors can explore the gardens, park, and the "House of the Forest" information center.
