Getting There

  • Walking

    From the Dessau Hauptbahnhof (main train station), the zoo is approximately a 30-minute walk. Exit the station and head north on Friedrich-List-Straße. Continue onto Kavalierstraße, then turn left onto Askanische Straße. Turn right onto Querallee. The zoo entrance will be on your left. This is a straightforward walk through the city, passing the Anhalt University of Applied Sciences.

  • Public Transport

    From Dessau Hauptbahnhof, take Tram line 1 or Bus line 11 towards Dessau, Junkerspark. Get off at the stop 'Tierpark'. The zoo entrance is a short walk from the tram/bus stop. A single ride ticket costs approximately €2.40.

  • Driving

    If driving, take the A9 motorway and exit at Dessau-Ost. Follow the signs towards the city center and then follow signs for 'Schloss Georgium'. The zoo is located near the Georgium Palace. Free parking is available near the zoo. Be aware that parking may be limited during peak hours.

Dessau Zoo, or Tierpark Dessau, is a municipally owned zoological garden founded in 1958 and located in Dessau-Roßlau, Germany. Situated in a park surrounding the former mausoleum of the Dukes of Anhalt, the zoo spans 11 hectares and is home to approximately 500 animals representing around 120 species. The park itself boasts over 1,000 trees, with around 125 labeled for visitors to learn about different woody species. The zoo primarily features animals of European origin, including wolves, goats, and donkeys, but also houses exotic species like kangaroos, llamas, and jaguars. One of its notable residents is Europe's oldest reticulated python, which is nearly 7 meters long and resides in the terrarium. Visitors can also see coatis, canaries, dwarf zebus, raccoons, beavers, Cameroon sheep, emus, ring-tailed lemurs, tamarins, and pig-tailed macaques. Other animals include fallow deer, pigs, various birds such as crowned cranes, alpacas, and big cats like jaguars and lynx. The Dessau Zoo is not only a recreational space but also serves as an educational center, illustrating the origins and habitats of its diverse animal population. The zoo participates in species conservation efforts, including supporting networks for breeding and preserving endangered amphibians and working to reintroduce species like the European mink and the little owl into their native habitats. The zoo also offers a variety of attractions and services, including playgrounds, petting areas with goats, sheep, and rabbits, and opportunities for visitors to feed some of the animals. Guided tours and special events are available, and dogs are allowed on leashes. The most prominent structure within the zoo is the mausoleum, a former resting place of the Dukes of Anhalt, featuring a 43-meter-high dome. Today, the mausoleum serves as a venue for various events.
