Discover more about Nepomuk Denkmal

The Nepomuk Monument, also known as Johannes-Nepomuk-Denkmal, is located on the Stadtplatz in Zwiesel. This monument, created in 1767, features sculptures of three saints: John of Nepomuk, Florian, and Sebastian. Wolfgang Luckhner, a hop supplier, donated the sculptures. The monument was originally placed in front of the Town Hall but was moved during renovations in 1974. The monument features a broad, curved base with a Latin inscription. The inscription reads: “SANCTIS JOANNI NEPOMUCENO SEBASTIANO AC FLORIANO PATRONIS SPECIALIBUS FIGURAS ISTAS EREXIT ORNOVATIQUE WOLFGANGUS LUCKHNER 1767”. Three pedestals rise from the base, with St. John of Nepomuk in the center, flanked by St. Florian and St. Sebastian. Despite the inscription, some believe the figure of St. Sebastian is actually St. George. In 1846, the sandstone group was gilded to protect it from weathering. The monument is part of Zwiesel's Sculpture Trail. St. John of Nepomuk was a priest who was drowned in the Vltava river for refusing to reveal the confessions of the Queen of Bohemia. He is a patron saint of Bohemia, bridges, and protection against floods.
