Discover more about Trinkwassertalsperre Frauenau

The Trinkwassertalsperre Frauenau, also known as Trinkwasserspeicher Frauenau, is a captivating reservoir in the heart of the Bavarian Forest. Built from 1976 to 1984, its primary purpose is to secure the drinking water supply for a significant portion of Lower Bavaria. The dam was commissioned in the autumn of 1984 by the then Bavarian Interior Minister Karl Hillermeier. Prior to its construction, the area faced severe water shortages due to the region's geology. The idea to create a reservoir to capture rainwater emerged in the 1950s and 1960s. Spearheaded by Max Binder, the district administrator of Regen at the time, preliminary investigations and preparations took place from 1970 to 1975 in the completely wooded and uninhabited area near Frauenau and Zwiesel. The high altitude ensured a largely pump-free water supply. Under the sponsorship of the Free State of Bavaria, a road network was built from 1976, 100 hectares of forest were completely cleared and the wood was removed. The town of Regen was already supplied with water in the summer of 1983, before the official opening. The reservoir is fed by the Kleiner Regen and Hirschbach rivers, with a catchment area of approximately 30 km². The catchment area lies in a drinking water protection area. Up to 15 million m³ of water are made available annually via the water extraction tower to the Zweckverband Fernwasserversorgung Bayerischer Wald, to which the districts of Cham, Deggendorf, Dingolfing-Landau, Freyung-Grafenau, Passau, Regen and Straubing-Bogen belong. At the time of its completion, the dam, reaching up to 86 m above its foundation, was the highest in Germany. A beautiful path with many resting places and wonderful views leads around the Trinkwassertalsperre. The dam is easily accessible via well-maintained and signposted hiking trails from Frauenau or the car parks at Oberfrauenau, Dörfl and Regenbrücke.
