Public Transport

To reach Tummelplatz using public transport, take a train to Mauth station. From there, take bus line 605 towards Tummelplatz. The bus ride takes approximately 15 minutes, but check the schedule in advance as services may be limited on weekends and holidays. A single bus fare will cost approximately €2-€4.

Walking

Tummelplatz is accessible via several hiking trails in the Bavarian Forest National Park. One popular route starts from the Sagwassersäge Igelbus stop. Follow the signs for 'Arnika,' which will lead you along the Sagwasser stream and through the forest to Tummelplatz. The walk takes approximately 1 hour. There are no costs associated with walking to Tummelplatz.

Ample parking is available near Tummelplatz. The most convenient parking area is at Sagwassersäge. From there it is a one hour walk to Tummelplatz. Parking fees may apply.

Overview

Tummelplatz, meaning 'playground' or 'gathering place,' is a 2.6-hectare forest clearing situated at 1139 meters above sea level in the heart of the Bavarian Forest National Park. Historically, this idyllic spot served as a vital hub for cattle herders and their livestock during the summer months. Shepherds would receive provisions here, and farmers could check on their animals grazing on the surrounding pastures.The clearing features a forester's hut, originally built around 1844 but destroyed by fire in 1858. It was rebuilt in 1860 and served as living quarters for forestry workers until 1956. Today, the building is owned by the National Park Administration and occasionally used for environmental education programs.Tummelplatz is easily accessible via well-marked hiking trails, making it a popular destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat into Bavaria's wilderness. Visitors can explore the lush forests, breathe in the fresh mountain air, and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. A short hike from Tummelplatz leads to the Großalmeyerschloß, a nearby rock formation that offers panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Lusen mountain.
