Tummelplatz, meaning 'playground' or 'gathering place,' is a 2.6-hectare forest clearing situated at 1139 meters above sea level in the heart of the Bavarian Forest National Park. Historically, this idyllic spot served as a vital hub for cattle herders and their livestock during the summer months. Shepherds would receive provisions here, and farmers could check on their animals grazing on the surrounding pastures. The clearing features a forester's hut, originally built around 1844 but destroyed by fire in 1858. It was rebuilt in 1860 and served as living quarters for forestry workers until 1956. Today, the building is owned by the National Park Administration and occasionally used for environmental education programs. Tummelplatz is easily accessible via well-marked hiking trails, making it a popular destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat into Bavaria's wilderness.
