Eigen + Art: A Berlin Contemporary Art Powerhouse

Galerie Eigen + Art is a cornerstone of Berlin's contemporary art scene, known for its long-term commitment to artists and its role in launching the careers of significant figures like Neo Rauch. Founded in Leipzig in 1983 by Gerd Harry Lybke (also known as Judy), it began as an unofficial gallery in East Germany, providing a platform for artists who were not permitted to exhibit by the government. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Eigen + Art expanded internationally with temporary spaces in Tokyo, Paris, New York and London before establishing its permanent Berlin location on Auguststraße in 1992. The gallery represents over 37 international artists working across various media, including painting, sculpture, film, video, photography, installation, conceptual art, and performance. Eigen + Art is committed to the continuous development of its artists, fostering long-term collaborations and integrating new generations into its program. The gallery also operates Eigen + Art Lab, a project space dedicated to supporting emerging artists and fostering dialogue around social norms.
