Public Transport

Engelbecken is easily accessible via Berlin's efficient public transport system. Several bus and subway lines serve the area. The nearest bus station is Heinrich-Heine-Platz, a 2-minute walk away. Subway lines U1, U2, U3, and U8 stop at Moritzplatz or Heinrich-Heine-Strasse, both within walking distance. A single ticket for zones A and B costs €3.80. A short trip ticket, valid for three stops on the S-Bahn or U-Bahn, or six stops on buses and trams, costs €2.60. Consider a day ticket for €10.60 for unlimited travel within zones A and B.

Walking

From Moritzplatz, walk east on Oranienstrasse, then turn left onto Michaelkirchstrasse. Continue straight until you reach Engelbecken. From Heinrich-Heine-Strasse, walk west on Leuschnerdamm, and you'll see Engelbecken on your right. The walk from either station is approximately 5-10 minutes. Enjoy the local shops and cafes along the way.

Taxis and ride-sharing services like Uber are readily available in Berlin. A short taxi ride from Alexanderplatz to Engelbecken would cost approximately €10. Engelbecken, nestled in the heart of Berlin's Kreuzberg district, offers a tranquil retreat from the city's vibrant energy. This charming man-made lake, also known as Angel's Pool, has a rich history dating back to the 19th century when it was part of the Luisenstadt Canal. The canal, constructed in the mid-1800s, aimed to connect the Landwehr Canal with the River Spree, but it eventually fell into disuse.Between 1926 and 1932, the canal was partially filled and transformed into sunken gardens, with Engelbecken retained as an ornamental pool. During World War II, the area suffered severe damage, and the subsequent construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961 cut through the former canal route, leaving Engelbecken in 'no man's land'.Following the reunification of Germany, the gardens were restored to their original design, and Engelbecken once again became a beloved inner-city oasis. Today, visitors can stroll along the tree-lined pathways, relax on benches, and admire the surrounding greenery. The lake attracts various birds and small animals, adding to the area's peaceful atmosphere. The nearby ruins of St. Michael's Church serve as a reminder of the city's past. Engelbecken also hosts community events, including concerts, art exhibitions, and festivals.
