Discover more about James Simon Gallery

The James Simon Gallery is the modern gateway to Berlin's renowned Museum Island. Named after James Simon, a significant patron of the Berlin State Museums, the gallery embodies a blend of contemporary architecture and historical allusions. Designed by David Chipperfield, the building serves as the central visitor center for the island, providing access to the Pergamon Museum, Neues Museum, and other prominent museums. Completed in 2018, the James Simon Gallery stands on the site of Karl Friedrich Schinkel's former 'Neuer Packhof' administration building, which was demolished in 1938. The gallery's design incorporates elements from the island's existing architecture, such as colonnades and outdoor staircases, drawing inspiration from architects like Schinkel and Stüler. A grand staircase leads to an elevated plateau with a striking colonnade, creating a welcoming entrance. Inside, visitors will find a range of facilities, including a visitor information center, a museum shop, a café, and spaces for temporary exhibitions. The gallery also provides direct access to the Archaeological Promenade, an underground walkway connecting four of the five museums on the island. The James Simon Gallery not only enhances the visitor experience but also pays homage to the rich history and cultural significance of Museum Island.
