Kulturforum: Berlin's Cultural Heart

The Kulturforum is a unique ensemble of cultural institutions located between Potsdamer Platz and the Landwehr Canal in Berlin. It arose from plans in the late 1950s to create a cultural axis across Berlin, an idea spearheaded by architect Hans Scharoun. However, with the construction of the Berlin Wall, the Kulturforum became a symbol of West Berlin, intended to rival the Museum Island in the East. The area where the Kulturforum now stands has a varied history. In the early 20th century, it was a middle-class residential neighborhood, later devastated by planning interventions during the Nazi era and the Second World War. After the war, the area lay fallow, providing an opportunity to construct a new cultural center for Berlin.
