Discover more about Sanssouci Picture Gallery

Located in Sanssouci Park, the Picture Gallery stands east of Sanssouci Palace and is the oldest extant museum built for a ruler in Germany. Frederick the Great, a passionate art collector, commissioned its construction between 1755 and 1764, replacing a former greenhouse. The gallery was designed by Johann Gottfried Büring, mirroring the New Chambers to create a symmetrical ensemble. The gallery's exterior is a long, yellow, single-story building with a central dome. Marble sculptures between the windows on the garden side depict allegorical figures of arts and sciences. The interior boasts a lavish design with gilded ornamentation, a rhombic-patterned marble floor, and green walls. Paintings in gilded frames adorn the walls, alongside sculptures. Today, the Picture Gallery displays over 140 paintings from the 16th to 18th centuries. Highlights include works by Caravaggio, Rubens, and van Dyck. The gallery also features French statues and antique busts. The Picture Gallery provides an authentic glimpse into an 18th-century royal art collection.
