Discover more about St. Nicholas' Church, Potsdam

St. Nicholas' Church, or Nikolaikirche, stands as a testament to Potsdam's historical and architectural significance. Located on the Alter Markt (Old Market Square), this Lutheran church is a prime example of German Classicism. The church's origins trace back to the 13th century, though the current structure was built between 1830 and 1837, designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel. Schinkel's design replaced an earlier church that was destroyed by fire in 1795. Inspired by classical Roman and Greek architecture, particularly the Pantheon in Rome and St. Paul's Cathedral in London, Schinkel envisioned a central plan building with a striking dome. However, the dome wasn't completed until 1850, after Schinkel's death, with modifications by Ludwig Persius and Friedrich August Stüler. The 77-meter-high tambour and dome dramatically altered the church's appearance, making it a recognizable landmark. During World War II, St. Nicholas' Church suffered extensive damage from air raids and artillery fire. Reconstruction efforts took decades, and the church was finally re-consecrated in 1981. Today, it serves not only as a place of worship but also as a venue for concerts and events. Visitors can ascend to a 42-meter viewing platform within the dome, offering panoramic views of Potsdam. The church's architecture features a Greek cross layout, a portico with four pillars, and statues of angels on its corner towers.
