Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg: A Green Oasis on Historic Rubble

Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg, situated on the eastern edge of Berlin's Pankow district, is a testament to urban renewal and the power of nature to reclaim. This 29-hectare park, a green lung in the city, has a unique history, having been built upon the site of a former debris dumping ground from the Second World War.In the aftermath of the war, Berlin faced the daunting task of clearing the rubble from its devastated city center. The area that is now Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg became a convenient repository for this debris, with an estimated 15 million cubic meters of rubble being dumped here between 1955 and 1977. Over time, these piles of debris were transformed into three hills, the highest of which reaches 91 meters, offering panoramic views of the surrounding area.In 1967, the landscape was transformed with the planting of hardy, perennial trees from Europe. Two years later, in 1969, paths were laid out, and the area was officially named Volkspark Prenzlauer Berg. Today, the park provides a welcome escape for locals and tourists alike, offering opportunities for strolling, jogging, and simply relaxing amidst nature.The park features diverse flora and fauna, with over 100 species of wild herbs and a variety of bird and animal life, including foxes, hares, rabbits and even raccoons. For those seeking recreation, there's an adventure playground for children, and in winter, the park's hills become popular tobogganing destinations. Since 2009, a Berlin Wine Society has been cultivating Riesling grapes in the park, offering wine tours and donating their Berlin Riesling to wine lovers.
