Walking
Plönlein is centrally located within Rothenburg's old town and is easily accessible on foot from most points within the city walls. From the Marktplatz (main square), walk south along Schmiedgasse. You'll pass shops and the Medieval Crime Museum. Continue until you reach the iconic view of Plönlein where Untere Schmiedgasse meets Plönlein. The walk is approximately 5-10 minutes, depending on your starting point. The route is mostly flat and paved, making it accessible for most visitors.
Public Transport
If arriving by train at Rothenburg ob der Tauber station, exit the station and walk straight ahead following the Bahnhofstraße. Turn left onto Ansbacher Straße, then right onto Kapellenplatz. Continue straight, crossing Galgengasse, which becomes Herrngasse as you enter the old town through the Rödertor gate. Continue straight on Herrngasse, then turn right onto Obere Schmiedgasse, which becomes Untere Schmiedgasse. Follow this street until you reach Plönlein. The walk from the train station to Plönlein is approximately 15-20 minutes. A single local bus fare is around €2-3, but walking is recommended to experience the town's charm.
Driving
If arriving by car, it's best to park in one of the large parking lots located outside the old town walls (P1, P2, P3, P4, or P5). These are well-signposted as you approach Rothenburg. From any of these parking lots, it's a short walk (5-10 minutes) to Plönlein. Parking fees are typically €1.30 per hour from 9:00 to 18:00, and free from 18:00 to 9:00. A day ticket costs €6. From parking lots P1 and P2, walk through the Spitaltor gate and follow the road until you reach Plönlein. From P4, walk through the Galgentor or Rödertor gate and follow the signs towards the city center and Plönlein. From P5, walk along Bezoldweg and follow the signs to the city center and Plönlein.
